People Are Hurting

helpkey

Turning on the news, we see hurt.  Flipping open the newspaper, we read hurt.  Talking to friends or relatives, we hear hurt. Pain isn’t hard to find, whether it’s experienced through the distance of a television screen, watching crying faces in a far off country, or as experienced as close as the hug of friend, who is coping with loss.

To look and listen to the pain in Richmond, this is what you may discover:

  • A child born in Richmond City is likely to be born to an unmarried mother aged 20-24 years old
  • In 2006, there were 1,892 nonmarital births in the city. In 2007, there were 2,104 nonmarital births in the city.
  • The nonmarital birth rate for black women is 82.9% v. 35.1% for white women
  • Children without fathers are more likely to take part in harmful behaviors, like smoke cigarettes or drop out of school.
  • In 2007,  Richmond had the highest rates of HIV, AIDS, Syphilis and Chlamydia in the state
